Banded Coral Shrimp

   
Size: 1 1/2 to 2 inches. Depth: 3 to 130 feet.
Distinctive Features: Red and white body and claws.
   
Description: With bands occasionally bordered in purple. Two pairs of long, white hair like antennae. Walking legs and some parts of the body are often translucent. Third pair of legs are enlarged and bear large claws. Altough the large claws break off easily, they can be regenerates and are somethimes of unequal size.
   
   
   
  Abundance & Distribution: Common to Florida, Bahamas, Caribbean.
   
Habitat & Behavior: Inhabit reefs. Cleaning shrimp that perch near the openings of recesses or sponges and slowly wave their antennae to attract fish.
   
   
Reaction to Divers: When approoached, retreat into protective recesses. If a bare hand is slowly extended toward the shrimp, it may leave its retreat and even attempt to clean fingers.
